Best Finish for White Oak?

12/8/16

Trying to find a good finish for white oak. Would like to see maximum contrast between light and dark grain. Enclosed photo is one coat Minwax Early American stain and one coat Danish oil. I consider this a pretty good result, but any other suggestions? (I do not have spray capability.) Thanks

For maximum contrast, wash the part off with mineral spirits immediately after staining. Or, apply a wash coat of thin shellac to the raw wood, then apply a glaze to fill the pores. White oak doesn't have big open pores like red oak, but the glaze will lay in the early grain. Clear coat is your choice, but I prefer a film coating instead of oil. Pratt and Lambert 38 varnish or slightly thinned satin poly.

May want to make a sample with Watco Danish oil- Walnut. Multiple coats needed.
24 Hours between coats. Also, dump the Minwax stain.....not a very good quality stain.

I am not a professional. Transfast dye (Light oak), pumice/BLO slurry. Good contrast for the flecks (if that's what you mean by light/dark). Bad contrast because it blends the heartwood and sapwood (left edge in image) closer together (if that's what you mean by light/dark).

Ok if you really want it to pop then use a waterbased dye to get the red/yellow or browninsh overall tone that you want. very light and not concentrated. Seal with a sealer like MLC or Chemcraft. it must be SEALER and not thinned topcoat.
Sand with 220/240 foam backed paper like mirka
Get some gilsonite which is tar essentially and thin a bit with paint thinner. Apply liberally and wipe off right away. Dry 1 hour then topcoat. Board in the middle has the gilsonite on it.

I got some Gilsonite and finished the project (see pics). Have not used dye before but will follow your procedure trying it on scrap first. What is the color of dye you used? Is the sanding sealer you recommend after the dye a thinned shellac like this Bulls Eye? Thanks, Ken
(sorry if pics are inverted I have no idea why)

Here is the finished product. Rather than do a barrier finish I used the following method:

Sand piece to 220

Apply one coat American Finishes American Walnut oil based stain. Wipe off well and allow to dry overnight.

Mix gilsonite powder with mineral spirits to liquid consistency and apply like stain.

Rub with steel wool. If piece has become too dark can lighten a little by wiping with naptha.

Apply Danish oil. Allow to dry overnight and reapply. 3rd coat can be added if desired. Steel wool between coats if desired.

(Sorry if images are inverted, if you view enlarged they will not be)

WOODWEB's forums are a highly regarded resource for professional woodworkers. Messages and responses that are crafted in a professional and civil manner strengthen this resource. Messages that do not reflect a professional tone reduce the value of our forums.

Messages are inappropriate when their content: is deemed libelous in nature or is based on rumor, fails to meet basic standards of decorum, contains blatant advertising or inappropriate emphasis on self promotion (return to top).

Libel:   Posts which defame an individual or organization, or employ a tone which can be viewed as malicious in nature. Words, pictures, or cartoons which expose a person or organization to public hatred, shame, disgrace, or ridicule, or induce an ill opinion of a person or organization, are libelous.

Improper Decorum:   Posts which are profane, inciting, disrespectful or uncivil in tone, or maliciously worded. This also includes the venting of unsubstantiated opinions. Such messages do little to illuminate a given topic, and often have the opposite effect. Constructive criticism is acceptable (return to top).

Advertising:   The purpose of WOODWEB Forums is to provide answers, not an advertising venue. Companies participating in a Forum discussion should provide specific answers to posted questions. WOODWEB suggests that businesses include an appropriately crafted signature in order to identify their company. A well meaning post that seems to be on-topic but contains a product reference may do your business more harm than good in the Forum environment. Forum users may perceive your references to specific products as unsolicited advertising (spam) and consciously avoid your web site or services. A well-crafted signature is an appropriate way to advertise your services that will not offend potential customers. Signatures should be limited to 4-6 lines, and may contain information that identifies the type of business you're in, your URL and email address (return to top).

Repeated Forum Abuse: Forum participants who repeatedly fail to follow WOODWEB's Forum Guidelines may encounter difficulty when attempting to post messages.

There are often situations when the original message asks for opinions: "What is the best widget for my type of shop?". To a certain extent, the person posting the message is responsible for including specific questions within the message. An open ended question (like the one above) invites responses that may read as sales pitches. WOODWEB suggests that companies responding to such a question provide detailed and substantive replies rather than responses that read as a one-sided product promotion. It has been WOODWEB's experience that substantive responses are held in higher regard by our readers (return to top).
