I have a large China Cabinet to finish made from stained Crotched Mahogany.

I will be using an ICA sealer and poly..

my rep told me to shoot the sample with a cup gun. which took me back a bit, as I have almost always shot Ilva and sayerlack with a Kremlin air asst.

anyone have advice in shooting a high built, cut and polished finish using ICA?

I can use a pot, cup or Air asst..

input would be appreciatED

only benefit to using the cup gun would be easier to clean if it sets up on you. the air assist would give you the best result for laying it out and atomizing the product.

Seems like it would be pretty expensive to mix enough product to spray a sample using the Kremlin unless you have a gravity feed attachment. The cup gun will be fine as long as you pay attention to the wet film thickness as you spray. You can then duplicate the job using whatever equipment you want to use.

I always used polyester to build a high gloss polished job then applied the 2K urethane as a topcoat for ease of buffing. If you have UV capability you can do the entire process in a day.

What ica product code are you using? is it 2 component or mono component? I have used it with a kremlin but you will risk microbubbles if you lay it on too thick and orange peel if too thin. You have to watch your humidity that it is not too dry and you do not want to dump a lot of air flow on it until it dulls out. too much air all at once will not let the product flow out on the surface while drying and you will get onion skinning.

7 days minimum dry time before polish minimum.

Dave,
that's exactly what happened. micro bubbles.

its a dual component 436-1395, Lucido polyurethane. And a 876-9068 Ora Verde Pu hardener.

My coworker sprayed it with a CAT grav gun and it had micro bubbles all over it.

so my question to Dave is, In sprayin a 9" x 6' china cab....what would be the best rig to use?

I must apologize,
product is
Chem Craft, not ICA

I shoot the verde from chemcraft quite often, I shoot it out of a conventional pressurepot, I get issues from time to time in my airless with microbubbles. I reduce the sealer 15% with their medium polyurethane reducer, And reduce the topcoat 10% with the medium polyurethane reducer. Lays out beautifully.

I was thinking of using a binks 2.8. pot with a DeVillbiss transtech.

I have a 1.4 to a 2.2 tip set up. and have aircaps to make it hvlp, lvmp and conventional..

do I want high pressure for good atomization or do I want to dial the air down to 10-20 psi?

I use a binks 2.5 gal pressure pot, with a 1.8mm tip gun. The pot pressure is 12-15 psi. The specific gun i use works best at ~20 psi. It is a Devillebliss FinishLine HVLP, but every gun is different, you'll have to play around with the settings on your gun for best atomization.

I once had a kremlin pot gun that wouldnt atomize unless i had ~60 psi going to the gun.

hope you are not just wearing your half mask to spray this.
been spraying Ilva 2k urethane for past 5 years. first thing my sales rep told me was to wear a supplied air system.

  • WOODWEB is a professional industrial woodworking site. Hobbyist and homeowner woodworking questions are inappropriate.
  • Messages should be kept reasonably short and on topic, relating to the focus of the forum. Responses should relate to the original question.
  • A valid email return address must be included with each message.
  • Advertising is inappropriate. The only exceptions are the Classified Ads Exchange, Machinery Exchange, Lumber Exchange, and Job Opportunities and Services Exchange. When posting listings in these areas, review the posting instructions carefully.
  • Subject lines may be edited for length and clarity.
  • "Cross posting" is not permitted. Choose the best forum for your question, and post your question at one forum only.
  • Messages requesting private responses will be removed - Forums are designed to provide information and assistance for all of our visitors. Private response requests are appropriate at WOODWEB's Exchanges and Job Opportunities and Services.

  • Posts with the intent of soliciting answers to surveys are not appropriate. Contact WOODWEB for more information on initiating a survey.
  • Excessive forum participation by an individual upsets the balance of a healthy forum atmosphere. Individuals who excessively post responses containing marginal content will be considered repeat forum abusers.
  • Responses that initiate or support inappropriate and off-topic discussion of general politics detract from the professional woodworking focus of WOODWEB, and will be removed.

WOODWEB's forums are a highly regarded resource for professional woodworkers. Messages and responses that are crafted in a professional and civil manner strengthen this resource. Messages that do not reflect a professional tone reduce the value of our forums.

Messages are inappropriate when their content: is deemed libelous in nature or is based on rumor, fails to meet basic standards of decorum, contains blatant advertising or inappropriate emphasis on self promotion (return to top).

Libel:   Posts which defame an individual or organization, or employ a tone which can be viewed as malicious in nature. Words, pictures, or cartoons which expose a person or organization to public hatred, shame, disgrace, or ridicule, or induce an ill opinion of a person or organization, are libelous.

Improper Decorum:   Posts which are profane, inciting, disrespectful or uncivil in tone, or maliciously worded. This also includes the venting of unsubstantiated opinions. Such messages do little to illuminate a given topic, and often have the opposite effect. Constructive criticism is acceptable (return to top).

Advertising:   The purpose of WOODWEB Forums is to provide answers, not an advertising venue. Companies participating in a Forum discussion should provide specific answers to posted questions. WOODWEB suggests that businesses include an appropriately crafted signature in order to identify their company. A well meaning post that seems to be on-topic but contains a product reference may do your business more harm than good in the Forum environment. Forum users may perceive your references to specific products as unsolicited advertising (spam) and consciously avoid your web site or services. A well-crafted signature is an appropriate way to advertise your services that will not offend potential customers. Signatures should be limited to 4-6 lines, and may contain information that identifies the type of business you're in, your URL and email address (return to top).

Repeated Forum Abuse: Forum participants who repeatedly fail to follow WOODWEB's Forum Guidelines may encounter difficulty when attempting to post messages.

There are often situations when the original message asks for opinions: "What is the best widget for my type of shop?". To a certain extent, the person posting the message is responsible for including specific questions within the message. An open ended question (like the one above) invites responses that may read as sales pitches. WOODWEB suggests that companies responding to such a question provide detailed and substantive replies rather than responses that read as a one-sided product promotion. It has been WOODWEB's experience that substantive responses are held in higher regard by our readers (return to top).
