Exterior Door Stain

What brand/type of stains are you all using for an exterior front door? I've never had to stain/clearcoat an exterior door - until now, so I'm interested in your experience and recommendations. If it matters, the wood is probably going to be rift sawn white oak for the frame with plain sawn panels. And my preference is a waterborne topcoat, something like Target Coating EM9300. Thanks.

I am no fan of clear film coatings on exterior doors. Just ask any wood boat guy, it takes a ton of maintenance. Likely to be sanded and refinished every 3 to 5 years based on locale and sun exposure. I'd wager, you will be the first person they call when the film starts to crack and let moisture get under it. Personally, they couldn't pay me enough to do that job.

This door is behind a storm door on a covered porch. It gets direct sun for a couple of hours some days on the bottom third. The existing flat veneered wood door was last refinished by an amateur using BORG stain/varnish about 15 years ago and shows only minor degradation where the sun hits it.

I've used the EM9300 on an exterior door and it performed very well. You need to put it on thin and many coats. It calls for 2-3 wet mils or it'll go blue on you. The door I did I put on 5 coats. As for stain, you probably want something with a metallic pigment, stable and reflects UV

A word of caution. A Wooden door behind a Storm door( I assume a full view glass door) is not a perfect scenario for keeping the door from feeling the effects of heat during the summer months. Tell your client to remove the Storm door.

Thanks Robert. I'm aware of problems that occur with a storm door over a wood door. In this case, the storm door was installed 8 - 10 years ago. The finish was last redone about 15 years ago with low end products and still looks pretty good other than the degradation (oxidation) where the sun hits it directly. The door is still flat, with no evidence of the veneer splitting or cracking. I think the new door will be OK with higher end finishing products. If I'm wrong we can always remove the storm door.

General finishes has a complete water based exterior stain/clear coat system for this. I did a mahogany entry that is east facing with an overhanging porch and its still looking good five years later.

Thanks Leo. That gives me some confidence the EM9300 will stand up well.

Thanks Jonathan. From what I saw in their literature, GF's line of exterior stains is pretty limited, although I'm sure I could custom blend them to extend the range. Normally, I use mostly GF products, and I might this time as well, but I'm looking to see what other systems people are using and how they have performed.

You can call them and or send a sample and they can make a custom color in their exterior formula

What a disaster the EM-9300 was. Bubbles large and small, even when I dripped some off the stirrer onto a clean piece of glass and spread it out with a razor blade. And it bridged around the pores in the sealed white oak and looked terrible whether I sprayed light, medium, or heavy coats. Lots of correspondence with Jeff Weiss at Target Coatings, who was very nice and very helpful. He refunded my purchase and replaced the product, which was very generous (except it can't cover the lost time and rework), but I asked for EM-6000 instead. I doubt I'll ever give EM-9300 another look. I ordered some GF Exterior 450 and just sprayed the first coat today. What a difference. Flat, smooth, no issues at all.

The EM-6000 arrived today and I sent the remainder of the EM-9300 back so they can hopefully find out what was wrong with it.

The main thing to consider when doing an exterior stain is not to us dye stain that will fade easily. I’ve never heard of metallic based pigment. I use linear polyurethane on the doors I refinish and it works great.

  • WOODWEB is a professional industrial woodworking site. Hobbyist and homeowner woodworking questions are inappropriate.
  • Messages should be kept reasonably short and on topic, relating to the focus of the forum. Responses should relate to the original question.
  • A valid email return address must be included with each message.
  • Advertising is inappropriate. The only exceptions are the Classified Ads Exchange, Machinery Exchange, Lumber Exchange, and Job Opportunities and Services Exchange. When posting listings in these areas, review the posting instructions carefully.
  • Subject lines may be edited for length and clarity.
  • "Cross posting" is not permitted. Choose the best forum for your question, and post your question at one forum only.
  • Messages requesting private responses will be removed - Forums are designed to provide information and assistance for all of our visitors. Private response requests are appropriate at WOODWEB's Exchanges and Job Opportunities and Services.

WOODWEB's forums are a highly regarded resource for professional woodworkers. Messages and responses that are crafted in a professional and civil manner strengthen this resource. Messages that do not reflect a professional tone reduce the value of our forums.

Messages are inappropriate when their content: is deemed libelous in nature or is based on rumor, fails to meet basic standards of decorum, contains blatant advertising or inappropriate emphasis on self promotion (return to top).

Libel:   Posts which defame an individual or organization, or employ a tone which can be viewed as malicious in nature. Words, pictures, or cartoons which expose a person or organization to public hatred, shame, disgrace, or ridicule, or induce an ill opinion of a person or organization, are libelous.

Improper Decorum:   Posts which are profane, inciting, disrespectful or uncivil in tone, or maliciously worded. This also includes the venting of unsubstantiated opinions. Such messages do little to illuminate a given topic, and often have the opposite effect. Constructive criticism is acceptable (return to top).

Advertising:   The purpose of WOODWEB Forums is to provide answers, not an advertising venue. Companies participating in a Forum discussion should provide specific answers to posted questions. WOODWEB suggests that businesses include an appropriately crafted signature in order to identify their company. A well meaning post that seems to be on-topic but contains a product reference may do your business more harm than good in the Forum environment. Forum users may perceive your references to specific products as unsolicited advertising (spam) and consciously avoid your web site or services. A well-crafted signature is an appropriate way to advertise your services that will not offend potential customers. Signatures should be limited to 4-6 lines, and may contain information that identifies the type of business you're in, your URL and email address (return to top).

Repeated Forum Abuse: Forum participants who repeatedly fail to follow WOODWEB's Forum Guidelines may encounter difficulty when attempting to post messages.

There are often situations when the original message asks for opinions: "What is the best widget for my type of shop?". To a certain extent, the person posting the message is responsible for including specific questions within the message. An open ended question (like the one above) invites responses that may read as sales pitches. WOODWEB suggests that companies responding to such a question provide detailed and substantive replies rather than responses that read as a one-sided product promotion. It has been WOODWEB's experience that substantive responses are held in higher regard by our readers (return to top).
