Finishes

I am fixing to start a set of shaker style cabinets, the lady wants me to mix stain and paint I mean the bar and the range top cabinet along with the built in range hood cabinet will be stained a dark brown and the remaining cabinets will be painted a white. I plan on spraying the stained cabinets with a lacquer.Queston is would you spray a white lacquer on remaining cabinets or use a latex my thought is I must stay with lacquer for the finishes to look the same. Another question is on painted cabinets what type of finish is being used today?

We use a vinyl undercoat that's tinted by our supplier as a base or sealer coat, then just normal lacquer topcoat over it. Works great and real easy to spray. We have found regular paints just aren't good in a production environment.

We use Gemini lacquer for sealers and topcoats. Vinyl undercoat we get from a company out of the Denver area called Durant Distributing. Been using them for over 25 years, awesome company.

You still use lacquer for kitchen cabinets? What kind of warranty do you give? There are far superior products, and most customers expect. They don't like being gentle around the sink and dishwasher, AND they don't like to wipe down water on them. I came close to loosing a ton of money when the lacquer failed around the stove and sink on a big job. Lucky for me, a washing machine hose burst in the second floor laundry room when they were on vacation. The entire kitchen was gutted. I went to church for a while after that!

Well Chris stated he uses lacquer and so do we. The only call backs I have had in the last 12 years for finish failure is a very bad taste in my mouth over conversion varnish that the manufacturer failed to stand behind. Cost my company well over 50,000 plus the negative crap that goes with it.

What do you guys use in wetter are like around dishwashers and vanities? Lacquer is terrible around water.

Adam haven’t had any complaints about it. Sherwian Williams makes a Moister resistant lacquer I have been reacently using ML Cambel pre cat they claim it to hold up well.

I switched to conversion varnish a couple years ago and now I will never use lacquer again.
I don't see a single advantage with lacquer.
Conversion varnish is many times more durable,
easier to spray, lays down better and cures
chemically instead of drying for weeks.
It actually comes out cheaper for me since it goes so much further.
I don't know why anyone would want to
use lacquer today. That's an outdated product,
for cars and furniture.

Sherwin Williams claimed precat would hold up 25 years ago. It doesn't. Here's a picture of my kitchen at the dishwasher, remodeled 25 years ago. Guess who is continually in trouble about kitchen cabinets?

Correction, wife says 22 years ago.

I'm a fan of conversion varnish myself! We use Sherwin- williams Kemvar plus with the Kemvar surfacer under it. Been using it for about 4 years now and we put it on everything that's painted. and for clear we use the Kemvar water white cv.

After seeing your cabinet I think I might check out the conversion varnish I used it a few years ago and didn't like the short pot life I go off and leave lacquer in my gun for a couple days and come back and start spraying.Cant do that with C/V I will have to change my habits.

We revisit quite a few of our projects over the years and never had an issue like the one in the pictures and all were lacquered . Application difference? Different sanding and prep? We are a really dry climate, versus humid? All I know is lacquer still works for us and our clients. We do a lot of work with it, 20-40 gallons of sealer and top coats per month. Take all of everyone's input with a grain of salt, or the entire shaker.
