Ventless (brand) Spray booths

11/9/19
Barry W. Larson

I am looking to upgrade from a home made spray booth (more of a finishing area) to something more professional. I am looking at Ventless brand spray booths as they should not require air make-up or extra heat. The booth will be installed in Southern Ontario, Canada so venting to the outside and not replacing heated air is not a good idea. Does anybody here have experience with the Ventless spray booths? Pros, cons? Expenses for maintenance. Any and all information greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I've used similar booths that also use gas phase scrubbers to remove VOCs like the ventless.

How reasonable they are with VOC depends on the type of filters used, and whether they are doing absorption or adsorption.

(one is eating the VOC chemically, the other is sticking the VOC to something making sure the VOC doesn't end up anywhere else)

adsorption is usually activated charcoal or carbon something. They are sometimes refillable, sometimes not (you can get refillable versions of whatever filters they give you in almost all cases).

Depending on amount of VOC, and volume of finishing, they may have to be changed quite often, and are not that cheap (a couple hundred bucks per filter). I don't know what ventless specifically does, but i've seen a bunch of these.

The ones i used to have on my booth on were about 300-400 a filter, and lasted a few months.

The other downside of adsorption is that the VOC is still there, just stuck to the filters. So it often still smells/etc until it naturally breaks down.

specialized filters can be found for different types of VOC that are absorption. They are good if you have a few VOC you want to target - you can often make them last a lot longer than generic charcoal.

All that said, overall, i didn't think it was worth it in the end. It was a lot of effort and cost, and it doesn't work all that well in the end.

If i had time and energy and a good source of carbon pellets, and could automate it (IE filter replaces pellets from a hopper, ejects used pellets into a canister), maybe i'd do it again.

Otherwise, honestly, you are better dealing with the heat/venting issues. They are permanently solvable, and while they have some cost, they do not require a lot of effort on your part once solved.

The ventless booth will take time continuously.

Run, don’t walk away as quickly as you can. We invested in a 20’ from ventless. Total disaster. Should have thrown 20.000 in the dumpster. Ministry of Environmental does not like it. My guys refused to work in it after a bit. We needed to convert to conventional booth after a few months. The cost to recycle the carbon was thousands. The concept may work as small table top booth for air brush but does not really scale up. Worst 9 months of my life. It was all smoke and mirrors in my opinion. I am in Ontario Canada. A proper small open faced booth installed to code may seem tike a problem but really much less in the end.

Sounds like they forced you to treat the spent carbon as hazardous waste?

Thanks for your insights Daniel - good observations and food for thought. Rich, I did see that thread, but thanks for reminding me. Bill, I really appreciate your sharing your experience with Ventless Technologies - In talking to the sales rep at Ventless I got the feeling they are reluctant to give out contact information from previous customers and your experience is likely the reason - I'm still waiting on some contacts in order to do my due diligence. I think I will take a pass and look at a conventional spray booth and then do what I have to do for make-up air. As Daniel points out a make-up air unit is a one-time purchase whereas the filters are an ongoing expense and I hadn't even taken into account the disposal of said filters which according to Bill is more of an issue than I envisioned. Thanks again - great information!

Best regards,
Barry W. Larson

WOODWEB's forums are a highly regarded resource for professional woodworkers. Messages and responses that are crafted in a professional and civil manner strengthen this resource. Messages that do not reflect a professional tone reduce the value of our forums.

Messages are inappropriate when their content: is deemed libelous in nature or is based on rumor, fails to meet basic standards of decorum, contains blatant advertising or inappropriate emphasis on self promotion (return to top).

Libel:   Posts which defame an individual or organization, or employ a tone which can be viewed as malicious in nature. Words, pictures, or cartoons which expose a person or organization to public hatred, shame, disgrace, or ridicule, or induce an ill opinion of a person or organization, are libelous.

Improper Decorum:   Posts which are profane, inciting, disrespectful or uncivil in tone, or maliciously worded. This also includes the venting of unsubstantiated opinions. Such messages do little to illuminate a given topic, and often have the opposite effect. Constructive criticism is acceptable (return to top).

Advertising:   The purpose of WOODWEB Forums is to provide answers, not an advertising venue. Companies participating in a Forum discussion should provide specific answers to posted questions. WOODWEB suggests that businesses include an appropriately crafted signature in order to identify their company. A well meaning post that seems to be on-topic but contains a product reference may do your business more harm than good in the Forum environment. Forum users may perceive your references to specific products as unsolicited advertising (spam) and consciously avoid your web site or services. A well-crafted signature is an appropriate way to advertise your services that will not offend potential customers. Signatures should be limited to 4-6 lines, and may contain information that identifies the type of business you're in, your URL and email address (return to top).

Repeated Forum Abuse: Forum participants who repeatedly fail to follow WOODWEB's Forum Guidelines may encounter difficulty when attempting to post messages.

There are often situations when the original message asks for opinions: "What is the best widget for my type of shop?". To a certain extent, the person posting the message is responsible for including specific questions within the message. An open ended question (like the one above) invites responses that may read as sales pitches. WOODWEB suggests that companies responding to such a question provide detailed and substantive replies rather than responses that read as a one-sided product promotion. It has been WOODWEB's experience that substantive responses are held in higher regard by our readers (return to top).
