White Wash on White Oak

Hello All
We are having a issue with White Wash on White Oak when mixing solids with veneer, for instance we have couple vanities now with solid face frame and slab veneer doors and drawer fronts, and the solids is coming out darker than the veneers. We tried bleach the solids but its coming out with a yellowish color. We are using white color stain from ML and Kristal top coat. We are getting a lot of requests for white wash now days, but not happy with the results, We are selecting our material as best as we can, but at $8.50 a BDF for Rift now days, we can only do so much.

Anyone out there having the same issue? Any idea will be much appreciate, Thanks for the help and be safe out there.

How fine are you sanding the solid wood? Sounds like you need either to sand the slab doors with a coarser grit, if possible, or use a finer grit on the solids, or both.

Thanks for the reply john, We use 150 grit for all. We used to use fine grit than 150 but we were polishing the wood instead and had problem getting the stain to grab.

Try to use a wash coat as first step. To equalize the absortion of the woods.
You can send a picture to be easier to understand your problem.
Hugs!

Eddie,

One will never be able to get the solids /veneer to match with out foolin' around.
1) Sample solids and veneer finished to spec and present to client and explain natural color difference issue.
2) Sample solids with veneer stained to approximate/match the general tone of the solids. I use water based dyes. Wash coat oak. Stain/glaze to depth of white you need. Seal/top coat and present to client. Note: the solids will also vary in color unless you radically hand pick, or have enough extra material ( 25% - 30% ) to wade through.
3) A B bleach system. 2 times mixed. B alone at least once. Neutralize with white vinegar. Scuff sand 220. Finish to spec and present sample to client.
Base price for option 1, bump % for option 2. Bump %%% for option 3

Staining only will always get this result. For best white wash on rift white oak we have found a toner is needed also. Throw a little stain in your sealer and first topcoat. It will do wonders in bringing everything together.

Wood bleach: some bleaches are yellower in the final results than other bleaches. We used Daly's 2 part bleach and it was okay but we needed to double bleach. We ran out and Daly's wasn't available so we switched to Go Chem which yellowed our wood. Still, we needed to double bleach, mixing A & B, making a new batch every 30 minutes. Neutralize with white vinigar. Air dry and get the fuzzies by "kissing" the woods with 320 grit sandpaper.

Solids vs veneers: machine sand to 180 and hand sand to 150. Then, on the solids go 2 grit sizes down, meaning hand sand 100 grit.

If you don't like the idea of 100 grit, go 120 but open the wood pores by spraying or misting on a 50/50 mix of denatured alcohol & water. "Kiss" the wood with 320 grit to sand the fuzzies off.

Use vinyl sealer as a barrier coat over your stain. I use regular vinyl sealer and not Krystal sealer under my Krystal topcoat and I prefer NOT to catalyze my vinyl sealer. Years ago there was no suggestion to add 1% catalyst to vinyl sealer and it's the same vinyl sealer. When Krystal was first introduced there was no Krystal Sealer. VS does its job adequately, we aren't building a tank. Also, VS is very thin, 15 seconds in a Ford #4 cup, no thinning needed. It's meant to be scuffed, not a aggressively sanded.

FORUM GUIDELINES: Please review the guidelines below before posting at WOODWEB's Interactive Message Boards (return to top)

  • WOODWEB is a professional industrial woodworking site. Hobbyist and homeowner woodworking questions are inappropriate.
  • Messages should be kept reasonably short and on topic, relating to the focus of the forum. Responses should relate to the original question.
  • A valid email return address must be included with each message.
  • Advertising is inappropriate. The only exceptions are the Classified Ads Exchange, Machinery Exchange, Lumber Exchange, and Job Opportunities and Services Exchange. When posting listings in these areas, review the posting instructions carefully.
  • Subject lines may be edited for length and clarity.
  • "Cross posting" is not permitted. Choose the best forum for your question, and post your question at one forum only.
  • Messages requesting private responses will be removed - Forums are designed to provide information and assistance for all of our visitors. Private response requests are appropriate at WOODWEB's Exchanges and Job Opportunities and Services.
  • Messages that accuse businesses or individuals of alleged negative actions or behavior are inappropriate since WOODWEB is unable to verify or substantiate the claims.
  • Posts with the intent of soliciting answers to surveys are not appropriate. Contact WOODWEB for more information on initiating a survey.
  • Excessive forum participation by an individual upsets the balance of a healthy forum atmosphere. Individuals who excessively post responses containing marginal content will be considered repeat forum abusers.
  • Responses that initiate or support inappropriate and off-topic discussion of general politics detract from the professional woodworking focus of WOODWEB, and will be removed.

WOODWEB's forums are a highly regarded resource for professional woodworkers. Messages and responses that are crafted in a professional and civil manner strengthen this resource. Messages that do not reflect a professional tone reduce the value of our forums.

Messages are inappropriate when their content: is deemed libelous in nature or is based on rumor, fails to meet basic standards of decorum, contains blatant advertising or inappropriate emphasis on self promotion (return to top).

Libel:   Posts which defame an individual or organization, or employ a tone which can be viewed as malicious in nature. Words, pictures, or cartoons which expose a person or organization to public hatred, shame, disgrace, or ridicule, or induce an ill opinion of a person or organization, are libelous.

Improper Decorum:   Posts which are profane, inciting, disrespectful or uncivil in tone, or maliciously worded. This also includes the venting of unsubstantiated opinions. Such messages do little to illuminate a given topic, and often have the opposite effect. Constructive criticism is acceptable (return to top).

Advertising:   The purpose of WOODWEB Forums is to provide answers, not an advertising venue. Companies participating in a Forum discussion should provide specific answers to posted questions. WOODWEB suggests that businesses include an appropriately crafted signature in order to identify their company. A well meaning post that seems to be on-topic but contains a product reference may do your business more harm than good in the Forum environment. Forum users may perceive your references to specific products as unsolicited advertising (spam) and consciously avoid your web site or services. A well-crafted signature is an appropriate way to advertise your services that will not offend potential customers. Signatures should be limited to 4-6 lines, and may contain information that identifies the type of business you're in, your URL and email address (return to top).

Repeated Forum Abuse: Forum participants who repeatedly fail to follow WOODWEB's Forum Guidelines may encounter difficulty when attempting to post messages.

There are often situations when the original message asks for opinions: "What is the best widget for my type of shop?". To a certain extent, the person posting the message is responsible for including specific questions within the message. An open ended question (like the one above) invites responses that may read as sales pitches. WOODWEB suggests that companies responding to such a question provide detailed and substantive replies rather than responses that read as a one-sided product promotion. It has been WOODWEB's experience that substantive responses are held in higher regard by our readers (return to top).
