I found today that a gallon of Clear Champbel Aqualente water base is expired one year ago and I have to spray a project tomorrow. My paint distributor is close all this coming week for holidays and I wonder if I will use it I should expect some issue.

Not sure about agualente specifically.

For waterbornes, unfortunately, the defoaming agents historically have not had all that long of shelf life (usually about a year), and that is one of the things that drives expiration.

(This is changing, and they are getting better now)

It will be pretty obvious if that's happened, it will be pretty foamy or you will get obvious air entrapment in the finish.

This is just one example of something that could go wrong.

I would not do knowingly do a job with expired product - it seems like a recipe for unhappiness. Nobody will have your back, and you will look like you are willing to cut corners if it goes wrong.

I'd probably rather try to use another product line i was less familiar with than expired product.

meh.... if It was stored in a stable environment I would stir the product into itself well... run it through a strainer and shoot a test piece out all the way to topcoat and see what happens...

Same here. It it was an unopened can stored properly (cool, no freezing) then I would at least shoot some on a test pc to see how it reacted.

I concur with the boys. I’ve shot many buckets of Aguelente. I would definitely stir it really well. Do not leave the thick goop on the bottom if there is any. It all needs to be put back into solution. Aguelente is precatalyzed. In wb terms, they added a strong cross linking agent to the mix. You need to get it back into solution. The cross linker increases the physical properties(strength, hardness).

Back in the day you could get crosslinker in a little bottle and add a few drops to good products to make them better. Except back then the crosslinker stopped working after a couple of days, but you could add more.

It’s kinda like no cat, pre cat, post cat laquer.

Another issue that makes water based products shelf life short is the fungicide usually doesn't last long. Make sure it smells alright too.
