I recently found out that Mohawk has discontinued their Industrial Sanding Sealer #610-1607. I spoke to them and they can recommend nothing to replace that product other than their Vinyl Sanding Sealer which is a very different product. Does anyone here know of a similar product that is still available from a different source?? Nitrocellulose based, very high solids, very fast drying time. I've been using this product since the 80's and really don't want to switch over to the vinyl sealers. Thanks in advance, Sam

Sam look for a company that sells Behlen bros lacquers, (Qualalac sanding sealer)...lacquers. or google the product. Woodcraft use to carry it, but not sure if they still do or not.
YOU may also find they carry Behlens qualavite gloss alcohol proof lacquer also..both tested brands and have been AROUND since the 1950's...

Thanks for the suggestions. Behlen and Mohawk are the same company. The MLCampbell product looks interesting but I'm a bit confused by the description...says available in 4 different toners and is intended for refinishing?? Regardless, Thanks!!

Well on the surface your right, Mohawk
And Behlen's are within the same RPM CO.
Just as Star Chemical and others they purchased to make up their monopoly of touch up and repair and best finishes inventories.
But unless they changed the original formulas of the qualivite finishes, they are still " Behlen" products at heart.!
That said, SW has good products also, in the nitro family, have had good success with them.
But I will remain a solvent acrylic user as I have been since the 90's. Nitro's have their place for sure, especially in refinishing and matching those amber colors needed to duplicate their aged appearence. And their fast dry characteristics for sure, but for modern work, especially colored work or other work that needs to not yellow, there is nothing better....IMHO.
Hope things work out for you though, best of luck.

Sam, Looked at your website to see what you do. Here is the company you need to buy your NC from. I see you do Guitars and he also has the NC you will want for that.
Talk to Jerry @TTC Coatings,I will post a link. Tell him my name as that will get you "in the door". You will have to buy in five gallon pails I believe, just ask if you want gallons.
The lacquer he makes blows away every brand in this thread as I have tested them side by side. Also his NC has no problems with mohawk stains and glazes.

You do not want ANYTHING made or marketed by Behlen. It is homeowner grade cockypoo! Tries it once yearsw ago not nowing any better and really enjoyed scraping it off with a razor blade everywhere water touched. You also don't want SW vinyl sealer as it doesn't powder it gums up. Really enjoyed wet sanding a whole project bcause of it. Somebody has to carry good old laq sanding sealer. Maybe MLC?

Peter, You want a very good NC Lacquer see my link above. This NC works like no other on the market and is very durable. People need to stop using the retail garbage out there and start using true industrial professional products.

No choice but retail garbage out west. TTC doesn't sell out west anywhere. The Behlen product works great and no homeowners use the stuff as it is hard to find now.

Uhhh... Behlens started out and continued to be the number one go to "industrial" wood finishing supplier in the forties through the sixties and beyond. John Nye, their head chemist through that time, and I, were close associates, he was an excellent chemist.!!
they remained a great company until they were bought out.!! After RPM/MOHAWK bought them out, thier chemist (mowhawks) started changing their products and discontinuing
A large portion of all but their decades long best sellers, such as oz polish, blue label paste wax, Qualivite gloss lacuer, Qualivite sanding sealer, and a few others, most, were discontinued over time.
What you have now is just a name and a well deserved reputation, used to now enrich RPM.....
BETWEEN BEHLENS, STAR CHEMICAL,
AND MOWHAWK's Chemist, Mowhawk built their own brands. And added new chemistry from new chemist they hired also.!!
But please don't put down one of the most respected industrial finish companies we ever had, based on whatever Mowhawk has turned them into.

I certainly agree with the comments on mohawk’s monopoly and degradation of many of the good products that they absorbed.

I have found ML Campbell to be my go to for the last 30 years. They to keep changing their products. I don’t know if it’s greed but I do know there’s a heck of a lot of government intervention, imagine that.

I’ll agree with the one poster it’s a little difficult to surf their website. Get on the phone talk to one of the text, not a receptionist, one of their tax.

FORUM GUIDELINES: Please review the guidelines below before posting at WOODWEB's Interactive Message Boards (return to top)

  • WOODWEB is a professional industrial woodworking site. Hobbyist and homeowner woodworking questions are inappropriate.
  • Messages should be kept reasonably short and on topic, relating to the focus of the forum. Responses should relate to the original question.
  • A valid email return address must be included with each message.
  • Advertising is inappropriate. The only exceptions are the Classified Ads Exchange, Machinery Exchange, Lumber Exchange, and Job Opportunities and Services Exchange. When posting listings in these areas, review the posting instructions carefully.
  • Subject lines may be edited for length and clarity.
  • "Cross posting" is not permitted. Choose the best forum for your question, and post your question at one forum only.
  • Messages requesting private responses will be removed - Forums are designed to provide information and assistance for all of our visitors. Private response requests are appropriate at WOODWEB's Exchanges and Job Opportunities and Services.
  • Messages that accuse businesses or individuals of alleged negative actions or behavior are inappropriate since WOODWEB is unable to verify or substantiate the claims.
  • Posts with the intent of soliciting answers to surveys are not appropriate. Contact WOODWEB for more information on initiating a survey.
  • Excessive forum participation by an individual upsets the balance of a healthy forum atmosphere. Individuals who excessively post responses containing marginal content will be considered repeat forum abusers.
  • Responses that initiate or support inappropriate and off-topic discussion of general politics detract from the professional woodworking focus of WOODWEB, and will be removed.
  • Participants are encouraged to use their real name when posting. Intentionally using another persons name is prohibited, and posts of this nature will be removed at WOODWEB's discretion.

WOODWEB's forums are a highly regarded resource for professional woodworkers. Messages and responses that are crafted in a professional and civil manner strengthen this resource. Messages that do not reflect a professional tone reduce the value of our forums.

Messages are inappropriate when their content: is deemed libelous in nature or is based on rumor, fails to meet basic standards of decorum, contains blatant advertising or inappropriate emphasis on self promotion (return to top).

Libel:   Posts which defame an individual or organization, or employ a tone which can be viewed as malicious in nature. Words, pictures, or cartoons which expose a person or organization to public hatred, shame, disgrace, or ridicule, or induce an ill opinion of a person or organization, are libelous.

Improper Decorum:   Posts which are profane, inciting, disrespectful or uncivil in tone, or maliciously worded. This also includes the venting of unsubstantiated opinions. Such messages do little to illuminate a given topic, and often have the opposite effect. Constructive criticism is acceptable (return to top).

Advertising:   The purpose of WOODWEB Forums is to provide answers, not an advertising venue. Companies participating in a Forum discussion should provide specific answers to posted questions. WOODWEB suggests that businesses include an appropriately crafted signature in order to identify their company. A well meaning post that seems to be on-topic but contains a product reference may do your business more harm than good in the Forum environment. Forum users may perceive your references to specific products as unsolicited advertising (spam) and consciously avoid your web site or services. A well-crafted signature is an appropriate way to advertise your services that will not offend potential customers. Signatures should be limited to 4-6 lines, and may contain information that identifies the type of business you're in, your URL and email address (return to top).

Repeated Forum Abuse: Forum participants who repeatedly fail to follow WOODWEB's Forum Guidelines may encounter difficulty when attempting to post messages.

There are often situations when the original message asks for opinions: "What is the best widget for my type of shop?". To a certain extent, the person posting the message is responsible for including specific questions within the message. An open ended question (like the one above) invites responses that may read as sales pitches. WOODWEB suggests that companies responding to such a question provide detailed and substantive replies rather than responses that read as a one-sided product promotion. It has been WOODWEB's experience that substantive responses are held in higher regard by our readers (return to top).
