Mortising on a bevel
10/21/20
I'm cutting relatively large (7/8" X 2 3/4") mortises in yellow pine. There is a bevel on the top of the piece and the initial entry into the material is very difficult. I'm planning on dropping the clearing bit more than usual below the cutting edge of the chisel and I'm wondering if anyone can think of a problem with this?

Why not temporarily glue on a block to provide a square face? You can glue with a paper joint and later pop it of with a light hammer blow.

Can the bevel be added after the mortise?

I think dropping the bit may be a problem as it will have more room to stray offline. Those bits are not meant to operate outside the chisel. They are to remove what the chisel doesn't. Make angled cradle for your leg and keep the bit up in the chisel. I have done this with good success on many chair leg mortises. One thing you may want to do if you are not is take out that large a mortis with two cuts. Set it up so you can run one way and flip it around and run the other. A 1/2" bit twice will clear it all with much easier than a 7/8" once.
