epoxy

I'm tackling a live edge table that has some cracks and voids some go all the way through and I want to fill them with black epoxy. Some of the cracks have some punky or pithy wood surrounding it that I know I need to stabilize at some point. Would the black epoxy soak into this even if I had tape around it or would I need to epoxy seal the whole table top and edges before I fill the cracks and voids? Also do I need to seal the bottom of the table with epoxy as well or could I seal it with something other than epoxy?

You do not want to coat the table with epoxy. It degrades with U-V light.

Tape up the bottom using foil duct tape. It seems to be the only thing I have found that stays. Then fill up the voids from the top. It will soak in and stabilize the punky parts. Depending on the size and the type of epoxy, you may need to do a couple pours. Once dry, sand and coat with the finish of your choice.

So the black is going to soak into the punky wood? I dont think I want that, wouldn't I be better off doing the first of the seal coat?

Yes you can brush in a thin clear coat to seal everything first. Then ad your colored resin.
