Wood top

Fixing to build mantel around gas fire place need a top built on it 24" x 52" trying to decide which way either glue up solid wood or use plywood and put solid band of wood around it. What would you recommend?

I can't imagine what the 24" is doing with the 52", but 24" projection from the wall will not pass code.

As for the "top" - go with what you know and what you like.

What do you mean it won’t pass code the gas fire place has all ready been set by the builder it has a 2x4 frame built around it. I am going in and closing it in with some Alder wood and that size pretty much does it giving a inch or two.

We are trying to figure out what you are doing exactly. There are codes for the depth of the mantel and the height it has to be above the fireplace as the radiant heat could catch it on fire if it doesn’t meet code.
I am thinking the shelf you are building is on top of the surround that was built to house the fireplace. I would use plywood with a solid edge if it was me.

Is this a free standing fireplace in the center of a room or a conventional fireplace in a wall? A sketch or photo might help everyone understand what you are doing.

It is a ventless gas fire place the builder has installed in a added room they put on the house. It has been framed in with 2x4s it sticks out in the room about 21” 49” wide and 44” tall. I am just closing that all in with Alder plywood on the sides and I was trying to decide to either use 4/4 Alder or put a plywood top on it. I am thinking I will go with the plywood and apply a 2” piece of Alder around the 3 exposed ends.

Typical through the wall ventless or vented stove. Planted against a wall with no flue, no chimney, no nothing. Typically zero clearance so wood of any kind (because there is no firebox) is allowed (hence framed in with 2x4's.

Construction of the "shelf" is whatever works. There will be very little heat as these units run a fan thought its probably wise to plan for a bit of warmth.

Usually accompanied by a remote supplied to the occupant for the brown chicken brown cow.
