Seeking a user manual and parts manual for a 226 Mattison 4 head moulder with tilting side heads.

Also is there anyone close to Vancouver Island with experience on this machine that I could hire to assist me in setting it up?

Hi Dave,
looks like you need somebody that has worked a lot on old mill planers and matchers. Out here in BC I took a class some 20 years ago with Perry Taylor.
He used to teach the planer mill program in Cranbrook and then moved on to the program the North Cariboo.
I think he can be reached at PTaylor@AULindustrialRepairs.com.
He also should be able to connect you with others in the Industry.

Good Luck,
Fred F,

You can also try posting this on the OWWM forum. Lot of people there knowledgeable about old iron.

Fred, I like your work and website!
Especially the part about “Good is not Cheap”

I ran a couple molders like those many years ago. As I recall, a 5 lb hammer was a key adjustment tool.

At one place, we had a 12" Mattison with a frequency changer that spun the heads around 8,000 rpm. It could shake the fillings out of your teeth, I am sure. I refused to run it on safety conditions. We replaced it with a 24" Panhiero that did not require a 5 lb hammer, but still required many adjustments.

Then the 5 head Weinig arrived, and the world became a lovely place.... On my own, I bought a Weinig Quattromat that was also the nicest thing on the planet. The old local stickers all went some years ago for the price of iron on that day.

Hi
Thanks for the reply - I will purchase the 5 pound hammer if someone that understands the machine can help me get it set up to power up. I am willing to pay for this help.

Dave

Wow, you have a project. My first moulder was an old Stetson Ross that I tore down and reassembled not because I wanted to but because the pine pitch was inches thick all over everything. I self taught myself how to run it but the day I replaced it with a modern 5 head euro moulder I couldn't dump that thing quick enough.

The best resource if you have no moulder experience is a book called "woodworking and knife grinding" by Moffet if you can still find them. Very old but really explains what the knives should be doing and more importantly what they shouldn't. I can't tell from the pictures but if it's a jointed head machine (I think I see outboard bearings) you just added a whole new level of difficulty. I'll scour my records but I believe all my Mattision stuff is gone.

Hi Dave,

If you can't find the book i have one.
We got a newer moulder so i rarely look at it.
If needed i can mail it to you.Like to get it back after a few week,as there a moments i can use it for reference.
Did you talk to Perry Taylor about this moulder?

Advice that a 226 requires a 5lb hammer to adjust isn't overly accurate. There are operators who don't understand the machine and will use what means and methods to adjust as needed. If the machine is out of adjustment, and maintenance doesn't know how or doesn't keep the machine in proper condition then adjustments become difficult. Its a down hill slope as soon as guys start adjusting with a hammer.
The 226 is nearly a 6 ton beast, if its vibrating , there is a big problem. That's either tooling issues, a bent spindle, outboard bearing or main bearings or a combination of these.
The 226 will make mouldings you cant do with a typical Weinig or the lightweight Quattromat. Depending on the product, the Mattison may be in your favor. S4S or simple mouldings, its not the best machine , but it can be done on them.
Also , you can get almost 13" width out of the 226.
Depending on the condition of the machine and your product, it could be a good fit.

Thanks for all the replies

I was able to get this set up and we ran our first 2 runs of insulated logs. Yes, insulated logs

We build cedar yurts and stand the logs vertical so by having tilting side heads we can use the same triple T & G knives for all different diameters

It took a but to get everything aligned but this machine is a great machine

I am going to bypass the feed rollers by installing 2 sets of self feed rollers

And no hammer so far lol

Hi Dave,
Did you ever find an owners manual for the 226?

FORUM GUIDELINES: Please review the guidelines below before posting at WOODWEB's Interactive Message Boards (return to top)

  • WOODWEB is a professional industrial woodworking site. Hobbyist and homeowner woodworking questions are inappropriate.
  • Messages should be kept reasonably short and on topic, relating to the focus of the forum. Responses should relate to the original question.
  • A valid email return address must be included with each message.
  • Advertising is inappropriate. The only exceptions are the Classified Ads Exchange, Machinery Exchange, Lumber Exchange, and Job Opportunities and Services Exchange. When posting listings in these areas, review the posting instructions carefully.
  • Subject lines may be edited for length and clarity.
  • "Cross posting" is not permitted. Choose the best forum for your question, and post your question at one forum only.
  • Messages requesting private responses will be removed - Forums are designed to provide information and assistance for all of our visitors. Private response requests are appropriate at WOODWEB's Exchanges and Job Opportunities and Services.
  • Messages that accuse businesses or individuals of alleged negative actions or behavior are inappropriate since WOODWEB is unable to verify or substantiate the claims.
  • Posts with the intent of soliciting answers to surveys are not appropriate. Contact WOODWEB for more information on initiating a survey.
  • Excessive forum participation by an individual upsets the balance of a healthy forum atmosphere. Individuals who excessively post responses containing marginal content will be considered repeat forum abusers.
  • Responses that initiate or support inappropriate and off-topic discussion of general politics detract from the professional woodworking focus of WOODWEB, and will be removed.
  • Participants are encouraged to use their real name when posting. Intentionally using another persons name is prohibited, and posts of this nature will be removed at WOODWEB's discretion.
  • Comments, questions, or criticisms regarding Forum policies should be directed to WOODWEB's Systems Administrator

WOODWEB's forums are a highly regarded resource for professional woodworkers. Messages and responses that are crafted in a professional and civil manner strengthen this resource. Messages that do not reflect a professional tone reduce the value of our forums.

Messages are inappropriate when their content: is deemed libelous in nature or is based on rumor, fails to meet basic standards of decorum, contains blatant advertising or inappropriate emphasis on self promotion (return to top).

Libel:   Posts which defame an individual or organization, or employ a tone which can be viewed as malicious in nature. Words, pictures, or cartoons which expose a person or organization to public hatred, shame, disgrace, or ridicule, or induce an ill opinion of a person or organization, are libelous.

Improper Decorum:   Posts which are profane, inciting, disrespectful or uncivil in tone, or maliciously worded. This also includes the venting of unsubstantiated opinions. Such messages do little to illuminate a given topic, and often have the opposite effect. Constructive criticism is acceptable (return to top).

Advertising:   The purpose of WOODWEB Forums is to provide answers, not an advertising venue. Companies participating in a Forum discussion should provide specific answers to posted questions. WOODWEB suggests that businesses include an appropriately crafted signature in order to identify their company. A well meaning post that seems to be on-topic but contains a product reference may do your business more harm than good in the Forum environment. Forum users may perceive your references to specific products as unsolicited advertising (spam) and consciously avoid your web site or services. A well-crafted signature is an appropriate way to advertise your services that will not offend potential customers. Signatures should be limited to 4-6 lines, and may contain information that identifies the type of business you're in, your URL and email address (return to top).

Repeated Forum Abuse: Forum participants who repeatedly fail to follow WOODWEB's Forum Guidelines may encounter difficulty when attempting to post messages.

There are often situations when the original message asks for opinions: "What is the best widget for my type of shop?". To a certain extent, the person posting the message is responsible for including specific questions within the message. An open ended question (like the one above) invites responses that may read as sales pitches. WOODWEB suggests that companies responding to such a question provide detailed and substantive replies rather than responses that read as a one-sided product promotion. It has been WOODWEB's experience that substantive responses are held in higher regard by our readers (return to top).
