Sloppy Inlays
6/24/13
Hello - I'm using the 1/8" sprial router bit that came with the brass bushing set to couple with my Porter Cable router. Problem is the material to be inlayed into the cut out is too small. I'm getting about 1/32" space all arount the inlay. I was expecting a tighter fit. I've made my pattern from 3/16" ply, and I'm using the same pattern to make the cut outs and to cut the inlay - removing the little bushing prior. Though I think my router is in perfect condition, I wonder would this problem stem from bit wobble? Any and all thoughts would be appreciated.

First measure the removable bushing with an accurate dial caliper. The wall thickness should be the exact same as the diameter of the bit. Then slow down with the cut. You can flex an 1/8" bit very easily. Personally, I don't use the downcut spiral that comes with the kit. I use an upcut. It makes works better in that fine kerf, and except for maybe a burr, it cuts very cleanly. Who's inlay kit did you buy. If it came from China, who knows if the tolerances are good. I only buy Whiteside.

Rich - Great input, on point. I was performing another test run tonight, and I can see the importance of routing slowly. I will make that measurement you suggest, and after trying to remove the embedded router dust from the grooves, I see the absolute importance of the upcut bit. I will buy a couple tomorrow. Thanks again. I'll provide future feedback regarding my results.
