I have had several compressors for my shop all to run air tools dealing with and around woodworking. The air sanders eat air in volumes. All of mine are and have been standeard piston type and none of them could keep up for more than one user.My current unit is an 80 gallon 7.5hp. I had came into contact with rotary vane types when I was in the Air Force so I checked into one for my self. A compressor shop, a pro shop told me how much better they are, more air volume, quieter, cooler etc. Only problem was cost , I could not justify it for my one man shop. I am retired from servece and never wanted to get big. I have only seen them in high doller businesses I guess that's why Air Force could afford to use one. I have only heard good comments about them over 40+ years working with tools. Long answer I am sorry but if I was starting over I would get into a unit to use, especially if I needed volume. The newer sanders (air) use less than when I started but in a multi person shop I think in long run would be worth it unless as a hobby. One other consideration is if you have to rebuild one it is not as easy as cylinder type. I did rebuild a rotary vane pump in the service but I had very good tech data. It is do able just not as simple. I can't give you a cost my unit was about $3500.00 but costs have gone crazy I n last ten years. I hope this helps in some way.
