Pump size

What size air assisted pump would you recommend for spraying pigmented and clear solvent cv? We do not spray everyday maybe once every few weeks but for 2 or 3 days when we do. Currently spray hvlp compressed air with pressure pot but would like less overspray. I have an airless and I know how much faster it is over the hvlp. For kitchens and baths I like solvent base but like Kem Aqua Plus waterborne for builtins. Am hoping to get one unit to do both.
Thanks for any info

anything in the 15-18 to one will do either binks wagner graco or cat with a .4 gpm or greater will work, a 10-1 will also do it but for the longer run and as coatings get heavier and with the pricing being close between the two, you get more pressure capabiity as these pumps last longer than ten years and the coatings are getting heavier and heavier, this way you have something for the future

good luck

I was looking at CAT h20 unit. It says ratio is 14 to1.

cat unit is fine go with the bobcat gun instead of the cougar, the cougar is heavy and the bobcat gun is much lighter

You don't need a 20 to 1 to spray CV. I have a 12 to 1 Binks that l use to spray pigmented CV and a 10 to 1 Graco that I use to spray clear CV and both are more than up to the job and l spray 400 + gallons of cv per year. In the 10 plus + years l've had them l have never needed more pump then they offer to get the job done. l should also mention both are small output pumps as well, l think the outflow on both are.4 gpm. I would look into the 14 to1 Cat pump.
To make things easier on you just use the pot & gun as your dedicated WB (Kem Aqua) set-up. Doing so will save you lots of clean-up time and solvent.

I have a CAT H20 with bobcat gun. Sprays CV all day every day without issue

I get really good results with pressure pot, hvlp compressed air gun when spraying the Kem Aqua plus. So I think like Nick is saying have the two systems. Somethings I am wondering about. When I spray the cv and use the turntable, the side that is down always gets overspray on it. If I spray a waterborne product like Kem Aqua I don’t have this issue. I’m thinking with the aaa overspray won’t get on backside, any thoughts?
Secondly, I have read on WOODWEB a lot of guys leave thinner in their systems. I tried this in pressure pot and a few days later when I unclamped pot top the rubber gasket on lid fell off and would not stay on. Is it common practice to leave thinner in an aaa system even for extended periods?
Thank you for all of the responses

always leave the pump system wet with clean solvent, always

also, depending on the mfg of the pot you can purchase a lid gasket that will not swell from the solvent vapors

good luck

Herb,
If you spray waterborne from aaa what would you leave in pump after cleaning it?

Leave the pump empty after cleaning out the WB finish

absolutely not leave it wet, with wb, water and acetone mix or mix of water and acrastrip wb cleaner, i use acrastrip wb cleaner, never leave any pump or pot system dry

good luck

Herb I totally disagree but I'm talking about my Kremlin AAA pumps. The pump is all SS and there only a GT seal. I shut my pumps done for the winter and never had a issue. Kremlin 15-25 and 10-18 pumps are so easy to disassemble so I usually unscrew the pump case and add a bit of Magnalube G on the seal.

I'm with Herb on this; leave the fluid lines wet.

WOODWEB's forums are a highly regarded resource for professional woodworkers. Messages and responses that are crafted in a professional and civil manner strengthen this resource. Messages that do not reflect a professional tone reduce the value of our forums.

Messages are inappropriate when their content: is deemed libelous in nature or is based on rumor, fails to meet basic standards of decorum, contains blatant advertising or inappropriate emphasis on self promotion (return to top).

Libel:   Posts which defame an individual or organization, or employ a tone which can be viewed as malicious in nature. Words, pictures, or cartoons which expose a person or organization to public hatred, shame, disgrace, or ridicule, or induce an ill opinion of a person or organization, are libelous.

Improper Decorum:   Posts which are profane, inciting, disrespectful or uncivil in tone, or maliciously worded. This also includes the venting of unsubstantiated opinions. Such messages do little to illuminate a given topic, and often have the opposite effect. Constructive criticism is acceptable (return to top).

Advertising:   The purpose of WOODWEB Forums is to provide answers, not an advertising venue. Companies participating in a Forum discussion should provide specific answers to posted questions. WOODWEB suggests that businesses include an appropriately crafted signature in order to identify their company. A well meaning post that seems to be on-topic but contains a product reference may do your business more harm than good in the Forum environment. Forum users may perceive your references to specific products as unsolicited advertising (spam) and consciously avoid your web site or services. A well-crafted signature is an appropriate way to advertise your services that will not offend potential customers. Signatures should be limited to 4-6 lines, and may contain information that identifies the type of business you're in, your URL and email address (return to top).

Repeated Forum Abuse: Forum participants who repeatedly fail to follow WOODWEB's Forum Guidelines may encounter difficulty when attempting to post messages.

There are often situations when the original message asks for opinions: "What is the best widget for my type of shop?". To a certain extent, the person posting the message is responsible for including specific questions within the message. An open ended question (like the one above) invites responses that may read as sales pitches. WOODWEB suggests that companies responding to such a question provide detailed and substantive replies rather than responses that read as a one-sided product promotion. It has been WOODWEB's experience that substantive responses are held in higher regard by our readers (return to top).
